MUSE @ Plugged In (Music Unity and Social Expansion) band program runs band classes and social events to create opportunities for musical development and build social connection for adults 18 and older with disabilities. In MUSE band classes, participants hone their music skills, further their bond with music, and cultivate musical and interpersonal relationships.

Additionally, MUSE-icians have opportunities for social connections away from the band room, including movie nights, game nights, watch parties, drum circles, and other activities. MUSE programming is held at the Record Co., a non-profit community music workspace based in Boston, MA.

MUSE bands meet once a week and perform at the Plugged In end-of-session benefit concert, with all proceeds donated to a charitable cause chosen by the students. MUSE-icians also participate in Plugged In community events such as monthly open mics, community performances, and fundraising opportunities.

History of the MUSE Foundation

The MUSE Foundation was founded in 2016. For nearly seven years, MUSE served the disability community of Greater Boston by promoting social interactions through music. Unfortunately, due to unique challenges, including COVID-19 and high inflation, MUSE could not continue its work as a stand-alone organization.

Plugged In and MUSE shared very similar missions  — using music as a tool for connection and social good. To ensure the continuation of the MUSE community and program continuity for its many students, Plugged In absorbed MUSE in the fall of 2023. MUSE @ Plugged In now provides MUSE bands the same teaching ethos and focus on community building previously offered by the  MUSE Foundation.
