The “Good tips” part of the program will be presented in four parts; “The tone chain” is a discussion of the proper tools necessary for optimum musical expression. Although focusing on electric guitar for demonstration purposes, all instruments in a traditional rock/jazz/blues band will be covered. “The Gig” is a discussion on being fully prepared for any situation that may arise at the gig. “The Band” is a discussion of the dynamic of the organization. Sometimes there is a bandleader and sidemen/women, and other times there is a self-contained band. Tips on being a good bandleader and being a good sideman or sidewoman will be offered. “Practice makes “nothing’s perfect” will cover maximizing performance for the individual and the band. It will include tips on playing as a band, the power of working with a metronome, and building and supporting a strong solo.

The “Stories” part of the program will be fun, even for the non-musician, as “The music business is not always like they portray it on TV, good or bad”, Sarno says. “I love to tell the funny stories”, he says. There will be a Q&A period where people can ask questions about the things that are important to them. “Many young musicians want to know about careers in music, and I can help them with that and hopefully save them a lot of time. A lot of successful musicians had someone in their immediate or extended family to guide them in their careers. Although my father’s first cousin was the arranger with the Glenn Miller band, I never got a chance to meet him, and basically had to “reinvent the wheel”; making all the classic mistakes and eventually figuring it out”. Tony will share his vast experience as a professional musician, which can help young musicians to excel at their craft and possibly help to guide their career choice.

Tony Sarno has toured and recorded professionally for over 30 years with his band and with David Clayton Thomas’ Blood, Sweat, & Tears, CBS Recording Artists HOLLANDER, Peter Tork of the Monkees, and has shared the stage with Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, Little Feat, Joe Cocker, Hall & Oates, and Johnny Winter. He has recorded for CBS Holland, Icehouse/Priority, Marconi, and Bandwidth Records.

The core mission of Plugged In is to empower our students to make a positive change in their world with music. Plugged In starts this process at our Community Engage Evening. This is an event where Plugged In students decide how they are going to give back to their community. Community Engage brings our students together to present and discuss different charities and causes they feel deserved to be recognized for the good work they do. At the end of the evening, students vote to determine the charitable organization that will be honored at the benefit concert at the end of the session.

This session our students have chosen to rock and roll for the Hole In The Wall Gang Camp! The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp is a summer camp dedicated to providing a real camp experience for students with severe and life threatening illnesses. With their core values of safety, camaraderie, possibility, and appreciation infused into everything they do, The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp makes positive change in the lives of hundreds of campers and their families every year.

The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp is dedicated to providing “a different kind of healing” to seriously ill children and their families throughout the Northeast, free of charge. It’s a community that celebrates the fun, friendship and spirit of childhood where every kid can “raise a little hell.”

The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp’s goal is to ensure that every child with a serious medical condition has the chance to experience the world of possibilities that camp has to offer. Through the generosity of others, The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp community provides this unique healing experience to kids in need and their families, including those who may not be able to come to Camp.

The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp was founded in 1988 by Paul Newman with one simple premise in mind, that every child, no matter their illness, could experience the transformational spirit and friendships that go hand in hand with camp.

Paul Newman, while a successful actor, was also a visionary with the heart of a child. His personality, playfulness and mischievousness are infused within every corner of Camp, from the pirate flag he raised on the tree house to the days he spent on the lake fishing with campers.

With unobtrusive expert medical care, it was Paul’s dream that Camp would provide seriously ill children with a fun-filled experience defined by compassion, laughter and acceptance.

Walk to Defeat ALS
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people across the country bring their determination, energy, and passion to the Walk to Defeat ALS. More than just a few mile trek, it’s an opportunity to bring hope to ALS patients, to raise money for a cure, and to join together to fight for something important. The Walk to Defeat ALS is the ALS Foundations largest event, raising funds to sustain patient care and support research for much of the following year. Approximately 165 walks are held around the country each year. Since 2000, the events have raised over $137 million toward their mission – a world without ALS. The Walk to Defeat ALS empowers patients, friends, families, and the business community to fight back against a disease that leaves many feeling powerless.

The Jimmy Fund

The Jimmy Fund Clinic at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a place where children and their families find hope. For people in New England and around the globe, the Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world’s premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Starting in the 1940s, when Institute founder Sidney Farber, M.D. used drug therapy to achieve the first-ever remissions of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Dana-Farber researchers have made strides against virtually every type of cancer that strikes children.

The Heifer Fund envisions a world of communities living together in peace and equitably sharing the resources of a healthy planet. The Heifer Fund aims to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. It’s a simple strategy, to “Pass on the Gift.” As people share their animals’ offspring with others – along with their knowledge, resources, and skills – an expanding network of hope, dignity, and self-reliance is created that reaches around the globe.

The Butterfly Project

The Butterfly Project has been created for self-harmers who feel they are ready to stop and need the motivation or support to do so. The idea is simple. The self-harmer simply draws a butterfly on their place(s) of self-harm and, if the butterfly fades without them self-harming, it means it has lived and flown away, giving them a sense of achievement. To help strengthen the self-harmers connection to recovery the butterflies are often given the names of friends, family and other supportive individuals. If they do self-harm with the butterfly there: they will have to wash it off. If that does happen, they can start the process again by drawing a new one. The Butterfly Project aims to spread awareness and support of self injury.

The purpose of This Star Won’t Go Out (TSWGO) foundation is to financially assist families struggling through the journey of raising a child diagnosed with cancer. Caring for a seriously ill child creates tremendous stress for the family system and having to worry about money is both burdensome and distracting. TSWGO’s goal is to carry a bit of that burden for hurting families through financial gifts. TSWGO was established in memory of 16-year old Esther Earl who succumbed to thyroid cancer after a full life filled with social justice, loving her friends, her family and cats, and always remembering to be awesome

Instruments: 6 or 7 string electric guitar, acoustic guitar

Levels: Beginner to Advanced

Stephanie Goyer, a Berklee College of Music graduate, has been playing guitar for 17 years and teaching professionally for 7. Steph is also an accomplished song-writer and has been teaching students song-writing skills for 7 years. Steph gigs regularly in the Boston area and has toured the east coast. Although her playing is mainly focused in rock and metal, she has studied classical, jazz and funk and enjoys working with students in any style of music.

Steph likes to cater her guitar lessons to the students interests, learning style and personal goals. Beginner students working with Steph can expect to learn all of the fundamentals like reading music, pick holding, fretting, string bending, sliding, and playing with vibrato. For advanced students, she puts a great emphasis on fret board knowledge, scales, theory, exercises and soloing. Steph incorporates technology into her teaching and is happy to make custom exercises and backing tracks for students to practice with or help with transcriptions, recording or song writing. Above all, her main goal is to make the student love guitar as much as she does!

Instruments: Drums, guitar (electric or acoustic), bass, vocals, keyboard.

Levels: Beginner to advanced drums, guitar, bass, vocals. Beginner keyboard.

Dave Scandurra is a multi-talented musician and teacher. A graduate of Berklee College of Music, Dave can proficiently play and teach drums, guitar, bass, keyboard and voice. He plays many regular gigs and shows with professional bands and Berklee faculty. Dave loves to work with students who want to broaden their scope of music with jazz and improvisation. He also loves to rock out too!

Dave’s goal is to help students understand the greater scope of the music. He works across the spectrum with broad conceptual ideas like “feel” or “groove”, and more specific techniques like reading, theory, notation, etc. His first priority with lessons is that his students are engaged and interested in the material. Fun is the goal, but Dave also encourages students to challenge themselves, because thats how we get better. Dave encourages students to try new things, whether that means a new style of music or learning instruments other than their “main” one.
