Needham – Under the heat of flashing stage lights, Adam Ozer, lead singer of the band The Dispute, was ready to rock. Upon the count-off of drummer Nate Sobeck, 15, The Dispute ripped through a furious cover of the Sex Pistols’ “God Save the Queen,” with Ozer embracing the screaming vocals of lead singer Johnny Rotten as his own.

The kids of Sandra Rizkallah’s Plugged In Teen Bands program took the stage at Mass Bay Community College over the weekend to raise funds and awareness of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
The benefit concert involved 19 bands and a professional drum group, Bongo Love, from Zimbabwe. It took two concerts and seven total hours to fit them all in, but by the end of the day, everyone was exhausted and satisfied with the performance.

It’s unlikely anyone in attendance will ever forget Aaron Harel’s bar mitzvah. Not many kids can boast a surprise performance by an internationally recognized band from Zimbabwe. The appearance of Bongo Love came courtesy of the 13-year-old’s participation in a burgeoning music program called Plugged In.

How do you get an African superstar to share the bill with a bunch of teen rock musicians from Needham? Just ask.
That’s what happened when Tom Pugh, bassist, guitarist, singer and co-founder of the Plugged In Teen Band program got in touch with the singer known as the Lion of Zimbabwe, Thomas Mapfumo.
”He really liked the idea,” said Pugh’s wife, program co-founder Sandra Rizkallah.
